A Voice Over Cruise -- Not Kidding
So when I clicked the link on the add that said “Voice Over Cruise” I thought I was in for a good laugh. That’s just what the world needs, a bunch of voice talent all on the same ship working on reads and voice styles while eating and drinking as much as possible. Sounds like quite a scene. After a quick study of the website though, I found otherwise. It’s all thanks to the legitimacy of the five coaches that will be heading up the voice over cruise workshop.
Deb, I think, is the person behind this workshop. She is a very talented voiceover specializing in character work. She’s stationed up in Canada, where the cruise originates.
Bob, of course, is the voice of Porky Pig, among others, and probably one of the countries premier voice actors that also teach. He travels the country on the weekends giving workshops, he’s got a one man show, and he’s got a successful voice over career represented by Abrams. Not a bad life!
Bill comes at this group from the acting/producing side with a successful production company in Burbank and he produces voice over demos as well as has a successful voice over career. He’s a Chicago guy so what’s not to love! I’ve met Bill and he is a stand up guy who knows what he’s talking about.
Julie Williams is a VERY talented voiceover out of San Fran and she is also a third degree black belt so watch yourself. She has an entire series of instructional audiobooks that cover the professional voice over world and act as a great introduction to the industry.
Joyce has a wonderful perspective for students coming from the hiring side as an audio director/producer for the promo departments at NBC, Disney Channel, Warner Marketing, and The WB Television Network. Her trademark phrase of “Think Less, Feel More” has set her apart as a source for wise advice and great voice coaching specific to promo.
So my initial skepticism was quickly put down after digging a bit further into the VoiceLympics Workshop Cruise. I won’t be attending, but if you’re looking for a vacation that you can write off as professional training this is the trip for you!
Anyone been on a voice over workshop cruise before? If so, feel free to put a comment that relays your thoughts on the experience, whether good or bad, below.
